Choosing Solar Power LED Lights

Solar power LED lights for outdoor lighting is the next in the line of products being produced that rely on solar power as an infinite power supply. Being able to avoid relying on electricity, solar power LED lights have made it easier for designers when it comes to lamps and lighting in the outdoor setting.

The Solar Powered Option

Solar power LED lights do in fact provide an infinite power source, the sun. However, the sun can be an intermittent source of power depending on the weather in the area where you live and how many hours a day you get of direct sunlight. Therefore, good solar power LED lights will also have an energy storage system. Otherwise you should stick with lights that are connected to the grid.

In order for solar power LED lights to perform reliably you need to have a solar panel and battery that is sized for the period of longest nights, shortest days and cloudiest weather which often occur at the same time of the year. As a result most of the solar lighting market was confined to those close to the equator with the longest length of sunlight and highest temperatures. However, technology has led to four major improvements in solar power LED lights.

Technological Improvements

The first is more effective illumination. LEDs help to provide directional beams of light, about ninety percent of this is usable for ambient lighting and another seventy percent is used for task lighting. In addition a 45 lumen LED light can perform to the equivalent of a 75 lumen fluorescent bulb which can reduce the cost and amount of electricity to run solar power LED lights.

The second area is through optimized system efficiency. With LED lighting there is no need for balancing resistors and associated losses. This means that LED light operation can optimize the current flows to get almost one hundred percent in the overall system efficiency.

Third, LEDs can be programmed and fine tuned. This means that users of LED lights not only select where light is delivered but also what level and time that the light is delivered. This aspect of LED lighting can reduce the solar panel size and the battery capacity by about fifty percent of the original outdoor lighting.

Lastly, solar power LED lights have improved efficiency, performance and lifetime at colder temperatures. This provides owners with an advantage over other types of outdoor lamps which loose performance and lifetime as the climate temperature drops. In cold weather environments, LED lamps are expected to last five to ten times longer than a DC fluorescent light.
